#70 The Winter I Never Had

Hey Pretty Girls!

I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas holiday! I unintentionally took a mini vacation from blogging, (over a month!) but since everything has slowed down a bit, I’m jumping back in!

For my comeback post, I decided to feature a design from KJIm Apparel , created by one of my friends, Kilolo Jenkins. Even though, it has been consistently 70+ degrees here in the south, I was inspired by the winter I never I had….

With the year coming to a close,  I think this would be a perfect opportunity to look back on my model life this far…

I have been modeling for about 6 months now and I am happy to say that this journey has been a wonderful, semi-stressful, yet fun-filled whirlwind. I have definitely learned a lot about myself and grew tremendously as a professional model. Here are some of the things that I learned so far. I hope some of these tips can help new models in the future.

  1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
    • I am the kind of person that never asks for help. I like to do things on my own and I don’t like to rely on other people. However, during my time at as a student at Dallas Modeling Academy, I learned about the importance of asking for help. During my finals week for DMA in SL, I had my own finals week in RL (I’m a graduate student). I originally thought that I could balance both, but the final I had to take in RL was A LOT harder than I thought. As a result, it took a lot more time and limited the  time I was able to prepare for my DMA final. With the combination of a hard RL final, having to stay up until 2-3am in the morning to prep for the DMA final and then waking up early to work full time, things just fell apart. During my final, I made terrible mistakes that I never usually make, and ultimately failed my DMA final (I NEVER fail so that was definitely a wake up call!). Even though this sucked so bad and I felt terrible about it, I am happy that I was able to learn this lesson. If I reached out to my teachers and asked for help, I am 100% sure that I would have done a lot better on my final. For the 2nd go around, I reached out, asked for help, and passed with flying colors! Ask for help when you need it!
  2. Do not over book yourself!
    • I struggle with this sooooo bad… My sisters can attest to this. It seems that I have this impulse to sign up for, cast, apply for every modeling job, fashion show, photoshoot, etc that comes my way. I have very strong initiative and I want to do and learn as much as I can. After failing my DMA final the first time, I had to take a moment to step back and look at what I was doing. This past month, I signed up for two runway shows back to back, in the meantime I’m a modeling student, graduate student, and I work full time. Among the styling and pose checks, the practices, in-store modeling, etc, it was difficult to keep my head above water and I was a bit stressed out. I always get what I need to get done but *phew* sometimes its hard lol. So I definitely recommend NOT signing up for everything that comes your way. Space things out and make sure you have the time to put out your best work. (yes I’m preaching to myself lol)
  3. Don’t get intimidated; have confidence in yourself
    • This month, I had to opportunity to participate in The Fantasy Angel’s Top 40 Live Casting. I’ll talk about my experience with that in a later post, but I can definitely tell y’all that I was very intimidated. The models that were auditioning had much more experience than me and I almost felt like I was out of my league. I have no idea if I made it to the next level yet, but either way, I am happy that went for it.  Take every opportunity as a learning experience and always find something positive to take away from it. All models have their own set of weakness and strengths no matter how skilled they are, how many shows they participated in, or how many titles they carry. Embrace your weakness and find ways to turn them into strengths!
  4. Be patient; take time to grow
    • As a new model, sometimes it’s hard to be patient with yourself. I am naturally an impatient person, so this is a tough one for me. I want to be in the best agencies and the best magazines right now! (lol). During these 6 months, I have learned that it’s important to be patient with yourself and allow yourself time to grow. Sometimes you will hear a ton of yes’s and sometimes you will hear no’s. Some people will love your styling ability, some people will not. Some people will love your look, some not so much. Through the ups and downs of your model journey, be patient with yourself. With perseverance and a little elbow grease, you will get to where you want to be in time! (yes, again I’m preaching to myself lol)

I hope these tips are helpful to someone out there! I absolutely LOVE modeling and it has become my  passion. I cannot wait until next year as I have some things lined up: a couple of agency castings and maybe a pageant (cross your fingers for me!) I’m also finishing up my education with Dallas Modeling Academy before attending my LAST school, (for at least a year or so lol) Miss Virtual World Academy.

In the next couple of posts, I’ll catch yall up on what I have been doing in December along with the stylings that I put together along the way. Until next time,  be safe as you bring in the New Year! ❤

XOXO
